Review of Types of Accounts Available in Qtrade

A minimum balance is not necessary to start a Qtrade account. Trading Accounts and Registered accounts are the two main types of accounts at Qtrade.

Depending on your needs and investing objectives, Qtrade offers several different account types.

The Qtrade Account Types are:

Trading Accounts

Cash Account

Margin Account

Registered Accounts

Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSA)

Retirement Savings Plans (RSP)

Locked-in Retirement Accounts (LIRA / LRSP)

Registered Education Savings Plans (RESP)

Retirement Income Funds (RIF)

Life Income Funds (LIF)

Trading Accounts

The most basic accounts for Canadians are Trading Accounts. Cash and Margin are included in Trading Accounts.

Cash

It’s simple to operate this account. Your typical, Unregistered Investment account is the Cash account. They provide screeners, Investment research, and analyst recommendations. With Cash accounts, users can continue to buy and sell stocks, treasury bonds, exchange-traded funds, and corporate bonds.

On Qtrade, there are several cash accounts:

Margin

You can use your current securities as leverage to buy more investments through the Margin account. Trading commissions on Margin accounts are incredibly low.

Registered Accounts

These cost-effective accounts allow investors to trade in securities such as options, bonds, stocks, and ETFs. There are six distinct Registered account types that Qtrade offers, including:

Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSA)

A tax-free savings account will typically be available through brokerage services and other financial institutions. Along with low Investment fees, this flexible Investment account is tax-free Savings for both short- and long-term objectives, such as retirement or home purchases, are possible with a TFSA.

Retirement Savings Plans (RRSP)

The RSP/RRSP should be taken into consideration if you are interested in investing in your retirement savings. A single person (individual RSP) or a married couple (spousal RSP) may be the account’s owner. Administration fees are not charged to account holders who trade frequently or have over $25,000 in the account. Individuals in the account have been free to invest their retirement lump sum or recurring payments.

Locked-in Retirement Accounts (LIRA / LRSP)

For those who have pension assets from prior employers, this account is ideal. With this account, you can use any old LIRAs or LRSPs you may have. You can tax-shelter a pension by using this account. This is because the pension would continue to be tax-deferred.

Registered Education Savings Plans (RESP)

For parents or guardians who want to invest in the future of their wards, the RESP account is a clear option. This tax-sheltered account can assist parents in making better plans for their children’s post-secondary or college education.

Monthly contributions from a parent’s primary checking account can be used to fund this account. The RESP plan is available as a family plan or an individual plan.

Retirement Income Funds (RIF)

When the client turns 71, every owner of an RSP is required to pay tax on that sum. By changing your RSP into a RIF or RRIF, however, you can postpone paying taxes on it. The owner’s bank account or Qtrade account receives payments from a RIF. These income payments may be distributed monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or annually.

Life Income Funds (LIF)

People can turn their LRSPs and LIRAs into usable funds by using the Life Income Fund. The customer’s bank account or Qtrade account may receive the funds.

You have the option of receiving these funds monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.
